ASTM D6299 Instrument QC and Control Charts

ASTM D6299 is the practice for applying statistical quality assurance and control-charting techniques to an analytical measurement system. In a petroleum laboratory it answers a different question than an oil-condition program: is the instrument-and-method combination still in statistical control, or has the measurement system drifted?

Control charts on check standards, not customer samples, are the usual D6299 picture. The practice does not set condemn limits on in-service oil. Those limits belong to monitoring practices such as D4378 and D6224, and to the statistical alarm-limit guide D7720. Mixing the two is how laboratories ship false alarms.
